…And Capture It

Squint your eyes and take a trip around the edges of the man where he meets the ground. Limiting the value scale to light, gray, dark gray, and dark, how many changes can you find along the way? There are over twenty. I have indicated twelve. This is the real information you need to be aware of when you draw.

FROM THE ARTIST'S BRAIN

Value reversal is not a trick or an artistic gimmick; it is a fact of the visual world. Look and you will find it.

Keep an eye on the edges

Enjoy the shifts in figure/ground value relationships as you would enjoy the intricate twists in the plot of a well-crafted novel or the changes in a Beethoven sonata. One of the most overlooked and yet most important aspects of any subject you choose to draw is the quality of the edges where the shape meets space. The appearance of these edges is affected by many factors:

The nature of the form — what it's made from. (Clouds will have softer edges, rocks harder, etc.)
